MCCANDLESS TOWNSHIP

McCandless Township where small-town charm meets suburban convenience, all under the watchful gaze of Judge Wilson McCandless.
Families thrive amidst top-notch schools and ample recreational spaces like North Park, offering golf, tennis, and ice skating.

Named after Judge Wilson McCandless, the township maintains a small suburban town and family-friendly atmosphere, and it prides itself on having one of the lowest real estate tax rates in Allegheny County. Initially a farming area, McCandless developed when oil was discovered in the early 1900s and an electric railway was introduced resulting in population growth and housing boom.

The municipality is home to a renowned school district, excellent educational institutions, outdoor (including Allegheny County’s North Park with its golfing, tennis playing, and ice-skating opportunities) recreational spaces, and a plethora of entertainment, sports, and shopping choices.

Part of the North Allegheny School District, McCandless encompasses five elementary schools, a middle school, and two high schools. North Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County, La Roche College, as well as a technical school founded by the engineer Alfred W. Beattie, are located here. The Northland Public Library serves the community well with its numerous programs and collections aimed at adults, young adults, and children.
