STRIP DISTRICT

#2 Best Neighborhoods for Young Professionals in Pittsburgh

#22 Best Neighborhoods to Live in Pittsburgh

Once a hub for manufacturing and shipping,  the Strip District is now a food and shopping destination, unlike any other in the country, with a large assortment of international grocery stores and retailers, boutique shops, independent merchants, and several of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh.

The Strip District is a small section of the city full of personality, especially on weekends. Industrial development flourished in the 19th century, with the iconic and now transformed Produce Terminal and converted warehouses. While the heart of the Strip remains unchanged, there is new construction for offices, condos and apartments, yoga studios, and hip offices for tech and robotics companies. The Strip District is a vibrant mix of old-style grocers and gourmet food shops. You can buy cheese and olive oil at Pennsylvania Macaroni Company, fresh fish at Penn Avenue Fish Company, seafood and meat at Wholey’s, or prosciutto and salami at Parma Sausage. Salem Market & Grill is your destination for Halal food and Middle Eastern fare. The neighborhood boasts plenty of coffee spots, including the classic La Prima and the newer James Cafe and de Fer Coffee & Tea hotspots.

You can also find street stands selling produce and t-shirts, souvenirs, flowers, and vendors selling everything from essential oils to sports team gear. Unique furniture from around the world at Bass & Bennett and Mahla & Co. Antiques is a must-visit place. You can learn about Pittsburgh's industry, culture, and sports at Heinz History CenterThe Society for Contemporary Craft presents the work of local, national, and international artists. And finally, take a moment to admire St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, one of the city’s oldest and most iconic churches.

Lunch can be fresh fish at Penn Avenue Fish Company with its fun, welcoming vibe, or catfish at Luke Wholey’s, spicy tacos from Edgar’s stand or at Primanti Brothers. Some of the best food is served at Café Raymond and Smallman Galley - which features four restaurant concepts. Iron Born Pizza, or DiAnoia’s Eatery offers mouthwatering Italian eats. Eleven serves refined, modern American cuisine, while another big Burrito restaurant Kaya serves up island-inspired food. Roland’s Seafood Grill and Iron Landing has been a Strip's staple for more than 60 years. The Pennsylvania Market houses an upscale food bazaar with six kitchen stations.

Wigle Whiskey makes a variety of organic, grain-to-bottle spirits, and Maggie’s Farm distills award-winning rums. Newcomers include Kingfly Spirits, as well as Cadence at the Strip. For a sweet tooth, stop in at Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop, the incomparable Mon Aimee Chocolat, or Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor that keeps the 1920-era ice cream parlor look.
